About the Author John Pavlik is professor and chair of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He is also director of the Journalism Research Institute at Rutgers and faculty associate at the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information. Having published widely on the impact of new technology on journalism, media, and society, Pavlik has also authored more than a dozen computer software packages for education in journalism and mass communication. He is co-developer of the situated documentary, a new type of digital storytelling using mobile augmented reality. He is a former senior fellow at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and was the inaugural Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Media Studies in 2008 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria. He received his PhD and MA in mass communication from the University of Minnesota and is a 1978 graduate of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Shawn McIntosh is a lecturer in strategic communication at Columbia University's School of Continuing Education, where he teaches graduate courses in critical thinking, ethics, and digital media. He was an adjunct faculty member at Iona College, where he taught online journalism, website publishing, feature writing, and information visualization; he has taught a course on media ethics at Rutgers University. McIntosh was an editor and freelance writer for ten years for various newspapers and magazines in the UK, United States, and Japan. He was also co-site manager and senior producer at Fathom, an online educational website consortium of leading academic institutions, museums, and research organizations in the United States and England. His research interests include social media; media, power, and democracy; and citizen journalism. He received a BS in microbiology from the University of Idaho and an MS in journalism from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.
