About the Product
Employment Law for Business and Human Resources Professionals, Revised 4th Edition explores the statutory and common law concepts surrounding the employer/employee relationship. It addresses topics crucial for human resources professionals, including workplace harassment, treatment of mental stress, precarious work, increases to minimum wage, and “equal pay for equal work” provisions. This text grounds discussion of laws and policies in real-world events. It provides a broad overview of how aspects of employment law and society interact through discussion of distribution of income, how working contributes to one’s sense of self, and social policy issues. Additionally, numerous cases are referenced throughout to illustrate and reinforce important concepts. Examining workplace laws in this way equips readers with a deeper understanding of employment law that will allow them to minimize risks and liabilities, be aware of the implications of actions proposed or taken, and know when to seek expert legal advice. The Revised 4th Edition captures recent updates relating to the amendments Bill 47 (Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018) made to Bill 148 (Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017). Bill 148 was passed under the previous Ontario Liberal government, and it made sweeping changes to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act (ESA). However, many of these changes have been cancelled by Bill 47’s amendments to the ESA, which came into effect more recently on January 1, 2019. Chapter 7 has been extensively rewritten to reflect these amendments. The effects of the Bill 47 changes are also reflected in several other chapters, and other changes include amendments to the ESA under Bill 66 (Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act, 2019) which came into effect on April 3, 2019.
