Several of these firms, including Lippincott & Margulies, Inc., George Tscherny, Inc., Chermayeff & Geismer Inc., and De Harak & Poulin Associates, Inc., have been in business for decades, while others, including Louis Fili Design and Sisman Design, were founded as late as 1989. Steven Heller's brief discussion of the New York design legacy is the starting point for this compilation. Then, with only minimal text, each design firm is represented by eight pages of designs. Brief essays by Paula Scher, Colin Forbes, Milton Glaser, and Tibor Kalman explore various aspects of the New York design experience. Though Graphic Design: New York is elegant in presentation, its compilers have chosen handsome superficiality over critical analysis and in-depth discussion.- Douglas G.
