Review
McGill is no poseur. She understands what makes her contemporary characters tick
The 13 raw, visceral stories in (her) first collection will not help you sleep at night. What they will do is prove that the ugliness and brutality you witness every day make for good fiction. (Emily Pohl-Weary, NOW Magazine)
McGill
is a shrewd observer of modern mores and the nature of relationships between friends, family and lovers. She creates haunting portraits of the underlying struggles inherent in human bonding, the need for love tempered by the need for control. (René Bruemmer, Ottawa Citizen)
A baker's dozen of urban sketches written in an arresting, caffeinated voice. Set in a host of urban locales. . .these stories are like stream-of-consciousness journal entries from the cultural front. -- Peter Schneider, Ottawa X Press
From the Publisher
Lurking under the surface of everyday life are powerful emotions: lust and greed, envy and fear, hate and resentment. Haunting, harrowing and provocative, Nichole McGill's first collection of short stories explores the reasons why we do what we know is wrong, how we are ruled by the darkness within us, and the ways in which we are inevitably alone with our secret desires and our innermost fears.
